Developed
in partnership with Volvo and Aisin AW, the Ford Escape
Hybrid was first launched in 2004 and is consider the
first hybrid SUV to hit the U.S. market. The 2006 Ford
Escape Hybrid is a 4 door, 5 passenger sport utility
vehicle (SUV) and is available in two trims, the Front
Wheel Drive (FWD) and the Four Wheel Drive (4WD). It is
powered by an Atkinson-Cycle 2.3 liter, 4 Cylinder (I4)
gasoline engine and when combined with the 50-kilowatt
high output electric motor, achieved a fuel economy of
36/31 (city/highway) mpg in the FWD and 33/29 mpg for
the 4WD trim. The combined power output for the electric
motor and gasoline engine is 155 horsepower. The 2006
Ford Escape Hybrid is a 'Full' hybrid system, in which
the power can be switch automatically between gas or
electric, or a combination of both to maximize
performance and efficiency at all speed and loads.
The Ford Escape Hybrid also share the basic design with
Mercury Mainer and Mazda Tribute, which differ only in
terms of features, trims and pricing. The 2006 Ford
Escape Hybrid is a carry-over from 2005 model.

Off the line, the 2006 Ford
Escape Hybrid feels fast
enough for a vehicle of its
size, although it's doubtful
that initial acceleration is
directly comparable to that
of the V-6 Escape, as Ford
advertises. Part of this is
due to the throttle itself;
there's a noticeable beat
before pedal pressure
translates into forward
motion......read

We didn't baby the Escape
Hybrid to see how high we
could get the mileage meter
to go. We drove it like we
would drive any other
vehicle, but still averaged
better than 35 miles per
gallon around town. The
standard Escape equipped
with a four-cylinder engine
is rated at 22 mpg in town
and 25 on the highway.......read

In a test, we found that all
this complex hardware works
pretty well and delivers the
goods. The EPA rating for
this truck is 33 mpg city
and 29 mpg highway. We
matched that in real-life
use, registering 33 mpg over
about 100 miles of
stop-and-go city driving,
and we came within 1 mpg of
the EPA’s highway number
over a 400-mile highway-only
run. We were impressed.......read
