2006 Ford escape HybridDeveloped in partnership with Volvo and Aisin AW, the Ford Escape Hybrid was first launched in 2004 and is consider the first hybrid SUV to hit the U.S. market. The 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid is a 4 door, 5 passenger sport utility vehicle (SUV) and is available in two trims, the Front Wheel Drive (FWD) and the Four Wheel Drive (4WD). It is powered by an Atkinson-Cycle 2.3 liter, 4 Cylinder (I4) gasoline engine and when combined with the 50-kilowatt high output electric motor, achieved a fuel economy of 36/31 (city/highway) mpg in the FWD and 33/29 mpg for the 4WD trim. The combined power output for the electric motor and gasoline engine is 155 horsepower. The 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid is a 'Full' hybrid system, in which the power can be switch automatically between gas or electric, or a combination of both to maximize performance and efficiency at all speed and loads.
 
The Ford Escape Hybrid also share the basic design with Mercury Mainer and Mazda Tribute, which differ only in terms of features, trims and pricing. The 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid is a carry-over from 2005 model.

We didn't baby the Escape Hybrid to see how high we could get the mileage meter to go. We drove it like we would drive any other vehicle, but still averaged better than 35 miles per gallon around town.
