The
Honda Insight was the first gasoline electric hybrid vehicles
to be sold in the U.S. it went on sale in the December of
1999. It was primarily design to be the most fuel efficient
car available in America, but its singularly focused on
the fuel economy limits its usefulness for consumers who
are yawning for some power and performance. Due to the demand
has been miniscule for the past several seasons, Honda has
decided to drop this model after the model year 2006, a
replacement for a new ‘dedicated’ hybrid model are in plan
for 2009.
The 2006 Honda
Insight is a two door, 2 passenger family coupe, it is available
in 3 trims as 5-Spd Manual (MT), 5-Spd Manual with AC and
CVT Automatic with AC. It is equipped with a standard 1.0
liter, I3 (3 cylinders), 73 HP engines that achieved 60/66
mpg for the manual transmission and 57/56 mpg for the automatic.
It is one of the best fuel efficient automobile in America.
The 2006 Honda
Insight remains completely unchanged from the previous model
year.

The Honda Insight also happens
to be America's most fuel-efficient
car. Given the car's 66-mpg
EPA highway mileage estimate
and 10.6-gallon fuel tank, one
could, in theory, drive from
Los Angeles to Salt Lake City
and still have a bit of fuel
left in reserve. In practice,
however, the car's range is
about 500 miles. Six years on,
the Insight still attracts plenty
of attention. But its singularly
focused mission of fuel economy
limits its usefulness. In years
past, one had to accept its
shortcomings -- only two seats,
not much point-and-shoot power,
a paltry 365-pound payload capacity
-- because there wasn't much
of an alternative.....read

The futuristic-looking Insight
remains unchanged for the 2006
model year and has changed little
since its debut. While its aerodynamic
styling makes the Insight look
like a sports car, it doesn't
perform like one. A 73-hp 1.0-liter
three-cylinder gasoline engine
is the primary source of thrust.
An integrated electric motor/generator
with self-charging batteries
provides added power when needed......read

Sporty
in appearance and overall feel,
the manual-shift Insight is
fun to drive. It can be surprisingly
vigorous when accelerating from
a stop. Regular downshifting
is necessary for passing; you
need to be in the proper gear
to get adequate passing and
merging performance.
Even with both the gas engine
and electric motor operating,
the Insight doesn't feel packed
with surplus power. An upshift
indicator suggests the best
time to change gears in the
five-speed manual to achieve
peak gas mileage, and the Insight
can be driven in a higher gear
than most cars for a given road
speed.....read
